Hospitals and Physician Practices have recognized the need to share healthcare information for decades. Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOs) have been presented as the answer.  The RHIO is based on the principle that if every healthcare provider in a geographic area shared clinical patient information, it would be better for the patient and reduce expenses for the providers by reducing medical errors and redundant tests.

The biggest challenge for RHIOs is the large capital and operational investment needed to address the information sharing infrastructure.
